The New Yorker is everything but a novice player in the mobile app market with their iPad app counting more than 20,000 paid subscribers. Like that’s not enough, they’re out with another title, this time made for both iOS and Android device users (and by both I mean two of the most popular platforms in the U.S.). Called Goings On: The New Yorker, the application is designed as a guide to New York City culture from the magazine’s staff. However, unlike their original app, this one is free to download, offering digital version of the magazine’s “Goings On About Town” section, which comprises listings and capsule reviews of movies, art, night life, music, dance, theatre, readings and talks, and restaurants. All of the listings from the print edition are included (and much more), and are browsable by category. What’s more, events can be filtered by date and location; and interactive maps show event and restaurant locations. Stars are used to highlight events “worthy of special attention” with additional information being provided for each venue. Of course, all these listings and recommendations can be added to favorites and shared via e-mail, Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare.
In addition, the application also offers special recommendations by the magazine’s celebrated writers and artists. There are four audio tours: you can walk with Calvin Trillin to his favorite restaurants in and around Chinatown, accompany Peter Schjeldahl through the Frick Collection, take a vintage shopping trip with Patricia Marx, and tour the High Line with Paul Goldberger.
And that’s not all – there’s the “My New York” section where writers and artists recommend favorite spots, daily real-time event updates and cultural news, and the “On the Horizon” section offering early word of upcoming events…
In a nutshell – if you live in the Big Apple, you simply *must* grab this app. Hit the appropriate link below and take it from there.
