Samsung Electronics posts a record quarterly profit of about $4.45 billion thanks in part to the success of its smartphone division.
The company’s mobile unit was responsible for 73 percent of the company’s total profit and this division’s operating profit margin rose to 18.4 percent. The company sold 90 million handsets overall, including 44 million smartphones.
The Galaxy Note has been a smash hit for Samsung and you can color me surprised. I found it to be a technical marvel but ultimately thought it was too large to comfortably use. The public has reacted differently, as it has sold millions of units.
I was recently in Seoul and you couldn’t walk 10 feet without seeing a Galaxy Note or a Galaxy Note advertisement. It’s not just Samsung’s home turf though, as the device seems to be selling well in the United States and we can probably expect a version for T-Mobile in the not-too-distant future.
You can expect the good times to keep on rolling for Samsung, as the company will introduce the Galaxy S III next week and this will likely be the most anticipated device of the year besides the next iPhone. I know that I’d buy it sight unseen based on the history of the lineup.
