MediaTek Dimensity 9600 series targets flagship dominance with 2nm chips

MediaTek is preparing to shake up the flagship smartphone market with its Dimensity 9600 series, expected to launch in September. The lineup will include two chips: the standard Dimensity 9600 and a new Dimensity 9600 Pro, marking the company’s first Pro-branded mobile processor.

The timing puts MediaTek in direct competition with Qualcomm, which is also planning a Pro version of its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chip for the same timeframe. Early leaks suggest the Dimensity 9600 Pro could deliver significant performance improvements that challenge Apple and Qualcomm’s best offerings.

Advanced manufacturing brings efficiency gains

The Dimensity 9600 Pro will use TSMC’s advanced 2nm (N2P) manufacturing process, according to leaked specifications. This node could deliver 10-15% better performance and 25-30% improved power efficiency compared to current chips.

The standard Dimensity 9600’s manufacturing process remains unclear. TSMC’s 2nm production capacity is limited, so MediaTek might use the older 3nm node or lower-binned 2nm chips for the standard version to control costs.

CPU gets major architecture overhaul

Both chips are rumored to abandon the traditional ‘1+3+4’ CPU design for a new ‘2+3+3’ configuration. This setup includes:

  • Two Ultra cores (Arm’s “Canyon” Cortex C2-Ultra) running at up to 5.0 GHz on the Pro
  • Three performance cores (codenamed “Gelas-B”)
  • Three balanced performance cores (codenamed “Gelas”)

The standard Dimensity 9600 may use the same layout but with lower peak frequencies to differentiate the models.

Gaming performance gets hardware acceleration

MediaTek is targeting serious gamers with the Dimensity 9600 series. Both chips will feature Arm’s next-generation “Magni” GPU architecture, though the Pro version may pack more cores.

The chips reportedly include dedicated hardware for frame insertion, allowing games running at 60 FPS to be smoothly upscaled to 120 FPS or higher. The Magni GPU also supports native resolution upscaling instead of relying purely on software.

Other gaming improvements include:

  • Better ray tracing for realistic lighting and shadows
  • LPDDR6 RAM support (Pro version)
  • UFS 5.0 storage support (Pro version)
  • Faster data transfer speeds for quicker game loading

AI capabilities target real-world performance

The Dimensity 9600 series will feature a dual-NPU design and a Neural Shader Scheduler (NSS) that dynamically splits AI tasks between the GPU and NPU based on efficiency needs. The chips may also include hardware support for Arm’s Scalable Matrix Extension 2 (SME2) to accelerate AI calculations.

MediaTek’s AI focus reflects the growing importance of on-device AI processing in smartphones. The same chip is reportedly being considered for OpenAI’s first AI-focused smartphone.

Early benchmarks show steady progress

Leaked Geekbench 6 scores from engineering samples suggest the Dimensity 9600 Pro could achieve:

  • Single-core: 4200-4300 points
  • Multi-core: 12000-12500 points

For comparison, the previous generation scored around 4000 single-core and 11000 multi-core. While not dramatic, these gains represent solid generational improvement.

First phones expected in September

Several flagship phones are expected to launch with Dimensity 9600 chips:

  • Vivo X500 (Dimensity 9600)
  • Vivo X500 Pro (Dimensity 9600 Pro)
  • Oppo Find X10 (Dimensity 9600)
  • Oppo Find X10 Pro (Dimensity 9600 Pro)

The first devices could arrive as early as September 2026, giving consumers a preview of MediaTek’s flagship ambitions. Success will depend on real-world performance and how well MediaTek can compete on both features and pricing against established rivals.
