Samsung is actually keeping its promise. That might sound like a low bar, but in the smartphone world, software commitments from manufacturers often get quietly forgotten. Not this time. Samsung has officially confirmed that the Galaxy S23 series will receive One UI 9.0, based on Android 17, and that it will be the last major OS update for those phones.
According to SamMobile, popular tipster Tarun Vats shared a screenshot of a conversation with Samsung support regarding the Galaxy S23 FE’s update policy. Samsung confirmed directly that Android 17 with One UI 9.0 is the final major upgrade coming to that device. And because the Galaxy S23, S23+, S23 Ultra, and S23 FE all launched on the same Android version with the same software commitment, all four phones fall under the same policy.
When Samsung launched the S23 series back in early 2023, it promised four major Android OS upgrades. The phones shipped with One UI 5.1 on Android 13, and since then they’ve received One UI 6.0, 7.0, and 8.5. That’s three down, one to go. So One UI 9.0 on Android 17 is the final stop for this lineup. Samsung has also reportedly started internal testing for this update, so it’s not just a confirmation on paper.
This matters more than it might seem on the surface. Four major OS updates was a big deal when Samsung announced it. At the time, it put Samsung ahead of most Android rivals and brought the company closer to Apple’s long-standing support model. Seeing Samsung actually follow through, confirmed in writing, gives buyers of older Galaxy phones real peace of mind. It also sets a standard the rest of the Android industry has to answer to.
Still, let’s be clear about what this means for S23 owners. Your phone is getting one more big update, and then Samsung moves on. Security patches will likely continue for a while after that, but if you’re holding out on upgrading your device, One UI 9.0 is your sign to start thinking about what comes next. The S23 Ultra was a fantastic phone in its day, but hardware ages, and software support eventually runs out for everyone.
For anyone still shopping or deciding whether to keep their S23 device, here’s the current picture:
- The Galaxy S23 series launched with One UI 5.1 on Android 13
- It has received three major updates, currently running One UI 8.5 on Android 16 QPR2
- One UI 9.0 on Android 17 is confirmed as the fourth and final major OS update
- Samsung has already started testing the update internally
The bigger picture here is that Samsung’s four-year update promise has genuinely reshaped buyer expectations. People now factor software longevity into purchase decisions in a way they didn’t before. And Samsung, to its credit, is honoring that promise with the S23 series. That’s worth acknowledging, even if One UI 9.0 is technically the end of the road for these phones.
