Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 just shattered preorder records

Five million preorders. Let that sink in for a second. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 series hasn’t even been on shelves long, and it’s already rewriting what success looks like for foldable phones.

According to SamMobile, tipster Ice Universe posted on X that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series pulled in somewhere between 4.7 million and 5.2 million preorders in total. And within that number, the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 accounts for roughly 2.9 million units on its own. That’s about 59% of all preorders across the entire Z Fold 8 lineup. If those figures hold up, this is the biggest preorder performance Samsung has ever seen for a foldable device.

Samsung had already flagged that demand was strong, calling out record-breaking numbers just days after preorders opened for the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8. But the scale of what’s being reported now is something else entirely. The company is reportedly struggling to meet demand across multiple markets, including South Korea, which is Samsung’s home turf. Delivery timelines have already slipped past the dates Samsung originally promised, which isn’t a great look, but it does tell you something about how many people wanted in early.

So why is the standard Z Fold 8 the clear winner here? Pricing probably plays a role. The Ultra sits at the top of the range and carries a premium to match, while the Z Flip 8 targets a very different buyer. The Z Fold 8 hits that middle ground where the specs are serious and the price is at least somewhat easier to stomach for the foldable-curious crowd. It’s the one that makes the most sense for the widest group of people.

There’s a bigger story here too. Foldables have spent years being the flashy niche product that most people admired from a distance but never actually bought. Numbers like this suggest that’s changing. Consumers are clearly getting more comfortable with the form factor, and Samsung has spent enough generations refining the crease, the hinge, and the software to the point where the hesitation is fading. Five million preorders for a product category that was struggling to find mainstream traction just a few years ago is a real shift.

The Pistachio color on the Z Fold 8 deserves a mention too. The 256GB variant in that finish is already sold out in some markets, which tells you that Samsung absolutely nailed at least one of its color choices. Nothing moves inventory like a color people actually want to be seen with.

Stock issues aside, this is a strong start for Samsung’s 2026 foldable lineup. The real test comes in the weeks ahead, when the hype cools and the return rates and reviews start painting a clearer picture. But right now? The numbers speak for themselves.
