The Redmi 17 series has just hit the market, and while it brings some genuinely impressive upgrades, the display situation is the first thing worth talking about. As per NokiaMob, both the Redmi 17 4G and Redmi 17 5G ship with HD+ screens instead of the Full HD panels found on last year’s Redmi 15 lineup. That’s a step down, not up.
The screen situation, explained
Both models carry a 6.9-inch IPS LCD panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. Smooth scrolling, sure. But the resolution drops to 1600 x 720px, which on a nearly 7-inch display means noticeably lower pixel density. If you’re watching a lot of video or reading small text, you’ll feel that downgrade. The 120Hz refresh rate softens the blow a little, but it doesn’t erase it. This is a genuine trade-off, not just a minor spec footnote.
Where the Redmi 17 actually impresses
Now for the good stuff. The battery. Both phones carry a 7,500mAh cell, which is enormous for this price range. Multi-day battery life is very much on the table here, and for budget-conscious buyers who hate hunting for chargers, that number alone might seal the deal.
The two models split on chipsets. The Redmi 17 4G runs on a more modest processor, while the 5G version gets Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 5. The 5G model also benefits from faster UFS 2.2 storage, so app loads and file transfers will feel noticeably snappier compared to its sibling. Both phones share the same RAM options, so your choice really comes down to connectivity needs and budget.
Cameras, features, and that RGB light
Camera specs are kept simple: a 50-megapixel main sensor on the back and an 8-megapixel front camera for selfies. Nothing exciting, but nothing embarrassing either. For a budget phone, that primary shooter should handle everyday photos just fine.
What’s fun is the RGB notification light on the back panel. It pulses for incoming calls, messages, and status alerts. Is it necessary? No. Is it kind of cool? Honestly, yes. It’s the sort of feature that makes a budget phone feel a little more interesting without adding real cost.

So what does this all mean? Xiaomi is clearly targeting buyers who want maximum battery life and 5G connectivity at a price that doesn’t hurt. The HD+ screen is a frustrating choice that will put some people off, but at under $200 for the 5G version, the overall package is hard to dismiss. Budget Android competition is fierce right now, and the Redmi 17 series is right in the thick of it.
