Samsung Galaxy Buds On leak reveals a clip-on earbud with some genuinely smart tricks

A clip-on earbud from Samsung that pauses itself when you fall asleep. Yeah, that got my attention too. A new leak has given us our clearest look yet at the Samsung Galaxy Buds On, and while Samsung hasn’t said a word officially, the details coming out of this leak are specific enough to take seriously.

According to Gizmochina, new design vector graphics surfaced through SammyGuru showing the Buds On in black. The device has been floating around in rumor circles since April, when a Samsung app quietly referenced something called “Galaxy Buds Able” with the unusual model number SM-U600. That’s a break from the SM-R series Samsung has used for every Galaxy Buds model before it, which suggests this isn’t just a minor variation. It’s a different category of product entirely.

The clip-on, open-ear form factor is the big story here. Unlike traditional in-ear earbuds that sit inside your ear canal and block outside sound, the Buds On clip onto the outer ear and leave your ear open. That has real tradeoffs. Background noise gets in much more easily, which is exactly why the leaked automatic volume adjustment feature makes a lot of sense. The idea is that the earbuds detect ambient noise levels and raise or lower the volume accordingly. Loud train station? Volume goes up. Quiet room? It drops back down. Simple, practical, and the kind of thing that actually solves a real problem with open-ear audio.

The other features in the leak round out a fairly solid feature set:

  • Head gesture controls, carried over from the Galaxy Buds 4 and Buds 4 Pro, for managing playback and calls without touching your phone
  • Voice assistant support for both Gemini and Bixby, letting you start a voice memo or ask a question hands-free
  • Sleep detection that automatically pauses audio if the earbuds sense you’ve dozed off

That sleep detection feature is a small thing, but it’s the kind of quality-of-life detail that people actually notice. Nobody wants to wake up two hours into a podcast they stopped hearing 90 minutes ago. And for a clip-on style that people might genuinely wear more casually around the house or while winding down, it fits the use case well.

So why does this matter beyond the spec sheet? Open-ear audio has been growing fast. Brands like Bose, Shokz, and even Amazon have been pushing clip-on and bone conduction styles as alternatives to full isolation earbuds. Samsung entering this space with the Buds On would be a direct signal that the company sees real consumer demand here, not just a niche. Samsung moving into a category tends to bring more mainstream attention with it.

Still, none of this is confirmed. Samsung hasn’t announced the Galaxy Buds On, there’s no launch date, and these features could change before anything ships. But the specificity of this leak, the design renders, the model number history, the feature details, makes it feel like something real is coming. Worth watching closely.
