Phone manufacturers have been slapping “gaming” labels on devices for years, but most of them are just fast phones in aggressive packaging. OnePlus might actually be doing something different with the Ace 7 series, and if the leaks are right, it could change what people expect from a performance phone.
According to Gizmochina, tipster Digital Chat Station, who has a solid track record with OnePlus Ace 7 leaks, says the series will run on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and include a new technology that pushes the chip’s performance beyond its standard limits. The tipster didn’t name the tech, but the online consensus is pointing toward an active cooling fan paired with OnePlus’s Wind Chaser gaming kernel.
So why does this matter? Because passive cooling, the kind most phones use, has a ceiling. A vapor chamber, even a massive one like the 6,000mm² setup in the OnePlus Ace 6 Ultra, spreads heat across the body of the phone. That helps, but it doesn’t remove heat. A fan actually moves air through the device and pushes heat out, which means the processor can run at full speed for longer before it pulls back. In a long gaming session, that’s the difference between a steady 165fps and a stuttery mess.
This wouldn’t be the first hint at a fan either. A May leak from the same tipster mentioned a cooling fan appearing in a test unit, but flagged uncertainty about whether it would make it to retail. The new leak sounds a lot more confident. Still, OnePlus hasn’t confirmed anything, so some skepticism is fair.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is no joke as a chip. Built on TSMC’s 3nm process, it uses Qualcomm’s third-generation Oryon CPU with two cores hitting 4.6GHz and six at 3.62GHz. That’s already a step up from the Snapdragon 8 Elite in the Ace 6. Add a fan to keep it from throttling, and you’ve got a phone that could genuinely compete with dedicated handheld gaming devices.
The Ace 7 series is also expected to ship with ColorOS 17 out of the box, following Oppo’s official announcement this week. Other previously leaked specs include:
- 185Hz display refresh rate
- Up to 16GB of RAM
- Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset
- Active cooling support
- ColorOS 17 preinstalled
The broader trend here is real. As mobile gaming gets more serious, with titles demanding more consistent frame rates over longer sessions, phone makers are being forced to think beyond just raw specs. A fan is a bold move in a thin-and-light market, but for the right audience, it’s exactly what they want.
