Samsung Promises Android 2.2 by End of Month

Samsumng Mobile UK has just confirmed that they’re rolling out Froyo starting today, with everybody getting it by the end of the month. That timeline sounds awfully similar to Motorola’s plans for Android 2.1 on the Backflip, but nevermind that. It’s still unclear if this update will be limited in geography to the UK, or if it will be a worldwide rollout, but fingers are crossed for the latter.

Froyo has a bunch of goodies to introduce to Samsung phones, the biggest ones being the mobile Wi-Fi hotspot feature, and support for Flash 10.1. You can also move apps to your microSD card, and the camera and photo gallery have had a ton of enhancements, plus there have been a lot of optimizations to make the whole thing run more smoothly. For a full tour of Android 2.2 and its features, check out our review.

Right now the only major Samsung Android handset in the UK is the Galaxy S I9000, though they also have the Apollo, Europa, and Portal too. It seems likely that this update for the Galaxy S will include the Wi-Fi Direct function we were talking about earlier today, which would enable the phone to send and receive using Wi-Fi, but without the need for a hub. We’ll let you know as soon as we hear about Android 2.2 landing on Samsung phones proper.
