LG QLED displays promise rich color, low power usage

LG Display is teaming with QD Vision to work on the next generation of displays and the so-called QLED (quantum dot LED) screens promise to offer brighter colors while using less energy.

While LG did not explicitly say what types of devices would use the new QLED screens, it would make a lot of sense to target smartphones and smaller connected devices because these will be the future of computer. Additionally, LG rival Samsung is killing it with its Super AMOLED displays, so this gives the company another reason to target mobile devices.

According to QD Vision, QLED displays can deliver pure colors at a lower power consumption rate than OLEDs. Additionally, it’s supposed to be much cheaper to manufacture and QLED displays are supposed to be ultra thin, transparent and even work on flexible form factors.

“LG Display has always been at the forefront of advanced display technology. This partnership with QD Vision will accelerate development of exciting new LGD products for the rapidly expanding display marketplace, and increase our industry leadership position,” said Chang-Dong Kim, Vice President of LG Display, in a prepared statement.

There’s no word on when we can expect commercial products to appear but I can’t wait to see these in person. Besides, more competition in the display space can only be good for us as consumers.
