Delta installs gate-side charging stations for your mobile devices

Whenever I fly, the first thing I look for at the airport – after finding my gate, of course – is a charging station. Unless I’m on a quick 50 minute flight between two nearby cities, I know I’ll need as much juice as I can get before hopping on board a plan. Delta is making life a little easier for travelers this holiday season and throughout 2011 by installing gate-side charging stations in 19 airports across the U.S. and seven of its domestic hubs.

Here’s what you can expect from the charging stations:

  • Two Delta re-charging stations at each passenger gate area
  • Each station features six standard 110 volt outlets and two USB ports per station
  • Recharging pads in all domestic Delta Sky Club locations designed for smartphones and mobile devices (many locations already have these—just check at the reception desk for your preferred adapter!)

Six standard outlets and two USB ports? Yes, please! While I’ve appreciated the Samsung chargers scattered across gates at airports these days, it doesn’t seem to be enough. I find myself standing beside one with a few other people, and lord knows how awkward that can be when I’m charging my iPhone with its short cable.

Delta says the cities getting charging stations soon are as follows: Atlanta, Cincinnati, Detroit, Memphis, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York-JFK and Salt Lake City as well as Boston, Columbus, OH; Hartford, CT; Indianapolis; Los Angeles; Nashville; Norfolk, VA; Omaha, NE; Pittsburgh, Portland, OR; Seattle and St. Louis.

It looks like the cities I frequent most will be getting charging stations from Delta, so that would be good whenever I fly with them. Otherwise, perhaps maybe an extra battery pack or extender might suit me a little better for those 6+ hour flights. Or perhaps I can use both and charge them all when I’m at a Delta gate or terminal. Brilliant.
