Samsung Galaxy S III to feature quad-core CPU?

An anonymous 4chan user is either leaking some seriously mind-boggling information about the Samsung Galaxy S III, or is just trying to troll us (which they’re well-known for). Either way, it’s caught our attention. Apparently, this random person has a huge inside scoop on the upcoming handset thanks to a briefing with some Samsung reps.

Samsung allegedly plans on unveiling the Samsung Galaxy S III at the 2012 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. According to the source, it will include — get your grains of salt ready — a 2.0 GHz quad-core CPU, 1.5 GB of RAM, a 4.65-inch display with a 1280 x 1024 resolution, 10 MP camera with 1080p 60 fps video, and 32 GB of internal storage. Just for comparison, my laptop — the one in which I’m typing on at this precise moment — has a dual-core 2.1 GHz processor inside. This smartphone is going to be nearly twice as fast as my laptop? It’s definitely sounding iffy at this point. Something like this would have insane power demands, right? Worry not Android enthusiasts, since the Galaxy S III will come with a 2250 mAh battery, and all of these internals are reportedly wrapped up in something only 9 mm thick.

It’s not totally impossible to build something packing this kind of immense power, but it is on the difficult side. Presently, all we have is the word of one random 4chan user. I don’t want to say we don’t need quad-core speed in a phone because a few years ago I said the same thing about dual-core. I was wrong. I’m sure we’ll reach consumer demand for something this powerful eventually, but right now it sounds too good to be true.

While we’re waiting for the phone of our dreams, the Samsung Galaxy S II, a perfectly speedy companion, is available now on Sprint and coming soon to AT&T and T-Mobile.
