Microsoft announced today that it’s opening the Windows Phone Marketplace in thirteen new countries including Bulgaria, Costa Rica, Croatia, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine, and Venezuela.

With these openings, the number of countries that have a Windows Phone marketplace now totals 54 and this number will continue to climb in 2012. The company hasn’t announced any dates yet, but it is expected to roll out the marketplace to the UAE, Bahrain, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kazakhstan, Israel, Thailand, and Vietnam.

This news come fresh on the heels of Microsoft’s announcement that the Nokia Lumia 800c and 610c is coming to China Telecom. This global push is much needed if Microsoft expects to compete with Apple and Google in the smartphone arena.
