Verizon flipping the switch for global roaming on select Android phones this summer

If you’re rocking a Droid 4, RAZR, RAZR MAXX, Rezound, then you have an update coming your way. What, pray tell, is in this update? Well, it looks like Verizon is flipping the switch and giving these handsets the global roaming capabilities they’ve had tucked away since day one.

This summer, Verizon Wireless will be updating the following 4G LTE smartphones for global use.

HTC Rezound
DROID RAZR by Motorola
DROID RAZR MAXX by Motorola
DROID 4 by Motorola

Customers will see a notification on their device when the software update is available for their device. After the software update, customers will be able to take their smartphone overseas and use voice service in more than 220 countries and receive data in more than 205 countries

While we’re sure that a nice chunk of owners of these phones may not actually utilize the global roaming capabilities immediately, it’s definitely nice to have the option. CDMA just won’t work in Europe, but thanks to the LTE radios in these handsets, it’s one step closer to not feeling as lame as someone who can’t just swap a SIM card out of a GSM handset and it work in a good chunk of the world.

While a specific date isn’t given, the summer is right around the corner and that’s good enough for us. Let’s hope that the date doesn’t get dragged back any further.
