After Apple launched the Touch ID-equipped iPhone 5s, everyone and their mama started talking about biometric sensors, like we haven’t seen them before the Cupertino company adopted the technology. Sure enough, what Apple managed to do is create an elegant solution that works much better than earlier implementations, and which will likely be used by companies and individuals all around the world.
A similar capability is in development for Android smartphones and may be launched in 6 months from now.
The name of the organization pushing this is FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) and it’s an alliance of 48 companies headed by the likes of PayPal and Lenovo.
According to FIDO president Michael Barrett, FIDO will allow consumers to have access to mobile services that they can use with very low friction, while keeping good security. The goal is to have “one standard to rule them all,” available on any device or platform, even iOS. Barrett went on add: “Our view is that it’s possible Apple might choose to start using FIDO, but that’s probably a couple of years out.”
We doubt Apple will sign-up for FIDO, but you never know. As usual, it will likely stuck to its loyal customer base which it knows best…
