You may recall a little while ago Rogers announced the ‘911 fee‘ was going up from $0.50 to $0.75 effective April 12th. The move was to bring the fee ‘in line’ with the same fee charged on other major Canadian carriers. Not a huge surprise, but it will certainly ‘cheese-off’ more than one Rogers customer. With the news applying to Rogers only, I had to wonder if Rogers’ little baby brother Fido would follow suit… and sure enough, today I’ve learned that Fido is doing the same, effective April 12th.
If fees like this really get under your skin, I suggest you head over to Virgin Mobile, Koodo or Wind. As far as I can recall, they do not charge any 911 fees.
Short Rant: I’d like to point out, this would have been an ideal opportunity for Rogers/Fido to stand out from the crowd… Perhaps, even waive the 911 fee and differentiate themselves from the rest. However, I suppose the execs at the top thought ‘well, if everyone else is doing it, we might as well too… it’s easy revenue’. Sad. The competition can’t heat up fast enough in Canada. Hopefully new players will push the ‘old guard’ into new features, benefits and services and dare I say it, even SAVINGS for customers… Customers that are already paying up the you-know-what for service. That’s my two cents.
