Apple iPhone may have unannounced mystery application hinted at by the apple how-to video on the iPhone - YouTube applicationUpdate: Well, apparently the mystery of the missing application has been solved. The recent news of the YouTube application for the Apple iPhone shed some light on what application/icon was causing all the other homescreen icons to get pushed over. The pic to the right illustrates what we’re talking about – the YouTube application.

Macenstein‘s got a pretty good eye. They’ve spotted a slight discrepancy in the Apple iPhone “How-To“advertisement (which you can find on the Apple website), that hints at a mystery application waiting to launch with the iPhone on luanch day – June 29th! If you look closely at every iPhone video released, to-date, that the icon layout on the homescreen displays 11 icons (the top two rows have 4 icons across, while the bottom row has only 3 icons). This odd number of icons results in an extra, “missing,” icon space at the bottom right corner of the homescreen.

This might mean that some mysterious application has been added to the homescreen, causing it to push all the icons one space to the right. It could also mean a bunch of other things – like Apple wanting an aesthetically pleasing layout for the close-up.

We’ll just have to wait and see (is there an echo in here?).

The post was originally posted at a time when there was no knowledge of the YouTube application.

This post was updated with the YouTube information. I made the connection between the new application, the new iPhone videos on the Apple site, and the “mystery” application.

We try to read our own stories from time to time
