Deutsche Telekom wants T-Mobile USA to merge with MetroPCS

Deutsche Telekom, who owns T-Mobile USA, doesn’t want to do business in America anymore, but they can’t take their company behind the barn and but a bullet in its head. They tried to offload T-Mobile USA to AT&T, but the government stepped in and told them that they’re clinically insane. According to Bloomberg, Deutsche Telekom’s newest plan is to have T-Mobile USA merge with MetroPCS. What most people tend to forget is that T-Mobile USA uses GSM technology while MetroPCS uses CDMA technology, so merging those two networks would be Read more

MetroPCS ends quarter with 9.5 million subscribers

While AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon get most of the attention, MetroPCS has quietly carved out a sizable share of the market with its no contract approach. The company added 132,000 subscribers for its first quarter and it now has roughly 9.5 million subscribers. MetroPCS reported revenues of $1.2 billion for the first quarter and the average revenue per user rose to $40.56. Because it offers no-contract service, its churn rate (how often users leave for other providers) is higher than the big four but its 3.1 percent churn rate Read more

Analyst: smaller carriers to grab 19 percent of smartphone sales by 2016

Are smaller carriers on the rise? One analyst seems to think so. Iain Gillott is the president and founder of iGR, a mobile industry consultancy group, and a study from his firm suggests that smaller carriers will make key gains in the mobile industry over the next few years. Regional carriers such as U.S. Cellular, MetroPCS, Leap Wireless, nTelos, and others currently represent less than 10% of U.S. smartphone sales. According to Gillott, as consumer demand for smartphones increases, the number of smartphone owners on these smaller second-tier networks will Read more
