Eco-friendly Samsung S7550 Blue Earth caught in the wild all in its TouchWIZ glory

By Dusan Belic on Thursday, August 13th, 2009 at 1:08 AM PST
In Devices, Rumors, Samsung

Samsung S7550 Blue Earth has been spotted in the wild. The eco-friendly device prides itself with a solar panel on the back, and an energy-efficient charger for those days when/places where there’s no Sun around. Furthermore, the phone is made WITHOUT using such harmful substances as Beryllium, Phthalate or Brominated Flame Retardants.

Aside from this, we’ve no detailed specifications. There is some camera on the back, and we see Samsung’s widget-friendly TouchWIZ UI running on that large touchscreen. Release date is unknown and the same goes for pricing. We do, however, think it will be released by the end of this year…

HTC’s CEO Peter Chou: We sold 1 million Magic smartphones!

HTC Magic

DigiTimes has an article about HTC’s efforts to focus on mid-range smartphones, saying that such devices will account for 50-60% of the company’s total handset shipments in H2 2009.

What they mean by mid-range smartphones are devices that will carry a price tag of around $300. And while that’s (I guess) good news for HTC, there’s one other piece of information we caught from the article. HTC’s CEO Peter Chou said that they’ve reached an important milestone, shipping more than one million HTC Magic units since the device was launched in late April 2009!

Kudos to HTC, we’ve no doubts their future mid-range phones will be just as successful, and in that sense, we’re looking to keep reporting on their products. ;)

After making it available in countries like Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam (in July), the all-touchscreen phone is heading to 20 more countries — including Australia, China, the UAE, Netherlands and Turkey.

Those not familiar should know the Omnia 2 comes with a huge 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED touchscreen, tri-band HSPA (900/1900/2100 MHz), WiFi, GPS, 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, and 800 MHz ARM processor. OmniaHD DevPack

After several beta versions, Samsung Mobile Innovator portal released the first stable version of the DevPack for the Samsung i8910 aka OmniaHD! The Korean company’s first device specific SDK is packed with all the tools and documentation developers need to make apps for Samsung’s flagship Symbian device.

Among the DevPack features, we highlight:

  • Custom APIs such as NaviSensor, GSensor and MotionUI, along with the rest of the sensor framework;
  • Samsung Mobile Widget framework for making widgets for TouchWIZ UI on OmniaHD;
  • Optimized user interface/environment which perfectly works on small laptops, making development as portable as it can get.

In a nutshell, Samsung really did its best to make sure developers have all they need to bring their work to the OmniaHD. In that sense, we are hoping to see some cool stuff being developed for one of the most capable multimedia phones on the market today…

Sony Ericsson Jalou announced; Special Dolce&Gabbana version also unveiled

In Announcements, Devices, Sony Ericsson

Sony Ericsson Jalou

Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) announced a new clamshell called Jalou. It’s not the Symbian-powered smartphone as we previously heard, but a fancy mid-range feature phone. It’s clearly targeted toward females as at 73mm it’s “shorter than your favourite lipstick.”

Specs wise, there’s a 3.2-megapixel camera on board, HSPA, GPS (U.S. only?), 2-inch QVGA internal screen, 1.3-inch 128×36 pixels external screen, Bluetooth, FM radio, media player, and a microSD memory card slot. Pre-installed apps include YouTube client and other Google (NSDQ: GOOG) stuff, IM and email clients, Walk Mate step counter. There’s also the so called Mirror Key to “check your hair before a hot date.” Sure, that will help. ;)

From the HSPA supported bands (900/1700/2100 MHz), we realize this baby can easily end up in T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) USA’s portfolio. Release date is set for Q4 when interested users will be able to pick it up in either Deep Amethyst, Aquamarine Blue or Onyx Black.

Huawei readies C7300 and T550+ touchscreen phones for China

Huawei is working to introduce two new all-touchscreen phones to the Chinese market – C7300 and T550+.

The first of the two is a CDMA2000 device, and will most probably end up in China Telecom’s portfolio. Specs wise, the C7300 boasts a 2.5-inch QVGA display, GPS, 2-megapixel camera, handwriting recognition support, media player and of course a microSD memory card slot. As for the size, it measures 109.4×57.6×14.2 mm, and has a weight of 110 grams.

The second phone, Huawei T550+, supports TD-SCDMA flavor of 3G, and is hence going to China Mobile (NYSE: CHL). We lack the details here, but we do know there’s a 2-megapixel camera on board, and we’re guessing a microSD slot, as well.

No word on pricing nor release date, at the moment…

Is this the LG Shine 2?

Is this the LG Shine 2?

A photo above apparently represents the upcoming and still unannounced LG Shine 2. From what I can tell, it looks pretty identical to the original Shine and at this stage we’re not exactly sure what additional features LG included in the Shine 2 mix. GPS could be useful, and the same could be said for WiFi.

Furthermore, we see the AT&T (NYSE: T) logo, hinting us the U.S. operator is ready to “Shine again” as soon the device is available. In the meantime, we’re hoping they’re eyeing the new Chocolate Touch (BL40), as well, which honestly looks much sexier…

Sony Ericsson W508 Bob Sinclar Edition

Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) has teamed up with Bob Sinclar to release a special edition of its mid-range Walkman phone – W508. As a result, the Sony Ericsson W508 Bob Sinclar Edition was created, boasting identical specs as the original device, which BTW was announced back in January alongside two other phones – W715 and C510.

The difference is in a specially designed style-up cover, as well as pre-loaded content that includes pictures, themes, ringtones and so on. In addition, a new Bob Sinclair album “Born In 69″ is coming with the device, too. Price is unknown, but we know the release date – it’s set for the third quarter, and that’s in selected European markets, only.
