Today 3 introduced Huawei’s 3G router into their portfolio, which interestingly enough sports an OLED display. Huawei is just making all sorts of things, eh?
The 3G router, officially names the Huawei E585 has a monochrome OLED display which allows the user to see signal strength, data usage, and battery life. Pretty nifty, and not too much unlike Sprint’s Overdrive (without the 4G option, of course). While this may be a nice feature on the device, the display has to be drawing some juice from the battery. Luckily, the E585 will still charge itself even if it is being used by the five WiFi devices it’s capable of sharing its 3G connection with, which is a plus if your pulling in a lot of data while using the thing. You can also configure the device with all three Linux, Mac, and Windows operating systems.
What I like about the E585 is that is also doubles as a storage device, since it has a built-in microSDHC slot. We’re not sure what the max capacity is, or if you can actually share what’s in the memory card with other people connected to the device, but it’s still a nice option to have. The router will run you about £50 ($75) on a pay-as-you-go plan. It’s expected to be available for purchase sometime in July.
Not sure if I’d need something like this with Android 2.2 now supporting a native WiFi Hotspot feature, but this is still a pretty cool device. Not having 3 in the US is another factor as well, but still, I think I’d have to pass on this one. Good job, though, Huawei.
