Japan’s DoCoMo looking at 3G-connected gaming consoles for expansion

How should a carrier grow in a mobile market as saturated as Japanese? Introducing new phone models is what everyone does, how about some other connected devices like eBook readers, tablets, netbooks and… gaming consoles. The last mentioned seems to spark DoCoMo’s imagination as they are “discussing this with various players,” according to the company’s president – Ryuji Yamada.

Although he hasn’t specified which “players” are that, it’s only obvious DoCoMo is talking to Sony and Nintendo to provide/enable connectivity options and eventually some other services to as many PSP and Nintendo DS users as possible. As you may know, Nintendo has recently unveiled its latest portable gaming console, 3DS, which could end up as one of the first such devices being offered by DoCoMo.

Connecting various devices to the Internet is not a new idea and many carriers plan to trial such offerings. Among the companies that want to join this trend, we find big names like China Mobile, Sprint, AT&T, KPN, Telefonica and T-Mobile.

World’s largest mobile network vendor Ericsson expects to see 50 billion connected devices by 2020, with some markets hitting 500% mobile penetration…

We’ll definitely be watching where this converged world is heading and keep you folks in the loop. Stay tuned, k? 😉
