No matter if you’re just a curious onlooker, or a seasoned astronomer, Star Walk from Vito Technology has long been favorite iPhone app for Star-gazers. Having fiddled around with it a bit myself, I can attest to how cool (and educational) the app is. It helps you discover everything about the night sky, from the stars and planets above, to the constellations you’re already familiar with.
At any rate, this post is simply to let existing users (and potential new ones) know about an update to the app. Vito Technogy has added the following features into Star Walk, and they’re worth noting… especially if you’re on an iPhone 4:
- New help arrows show you where to look to find the star, constellation or planet of your choosing. Just point your iPhone (or iPad) to the sky and the arrows will point the way!
- Gyroscope support on the iPhone 4 is now included
- Moon set information now included on the SkyLive screen
- Full multitasking support
- … and of course, the usual bevy of minor bug fixes
I wholeheartedly recommend this app. If you’re just curious about the night sky, or are simply looking for something cool to do one evening… It’s worth the spend! All you need is an iPhone with iOS 3.0 or later, and 88.7 MB of free space. If you give it a try, be sure to let me know what you think!

For what it’s worth, Star Walk is available for the iPad as well. Oooooh, think of all the extra real-estate on the iPad’s larger display! Download link below…

Note: If you don’t take my recommendation on this app… Perhaps you’ll take Apple’s. Star Walk won an Apple Design Award in the iPad Developer Showcase 2010. It’s all good!
