Apple iPhone textPlus 4 adds picture messagingOne of the reasons the Apple iPod touch is popular with teens is because there are free apps which enables users to send free text messages to friends. Arguably one of the best SMS apps is textPlus and a new version has hit the App Store and it adds cool new features like picture sharing and a stronger social networking features.

You’ll still be able to send and receive free text messages with this app but textPlus 4 now lets you use the front-facing camera on the iPhone 4 to add a picture. The company said this isn’t going against FaceTime at all because it just wants to use pictures for an added emphasis on the asynchronous communication nature of texting.

There will also be real picture messaging that will be free to users and it has apparently been the most requested feature by textPlus users. These are die-hard users too, as the company has already sent more than 3.7 billion messages.

The company is sort of dipping its toes into the social networking space by bolstering its Communities, which are essentially large-scale text chat rooms.

“textPlus 4 turns texting into a visually rich, live ‘hang out’ that’s uniquely and seamlessly layered on top of free text messaging,” said Scott Lahman, co-founder and CEO of GOGII, creator of textPlus 4, in a prepared statement. “While textPlus users have already created hundreds of thousands of Communities, we expect to see that number grow significantly given textPlus 4’s dynamic features. The app taps into a rapidly growing demand for richer, more engaging social experiences on mobile phones – and marks a significant milestone in our effort to evolve text messages into a social destination.”

These features should be available now for the Apple iPhone, iPod touch and the iPad and looks for these features to soon come to the Android version.
