Intel goes after tablet market with new chip

Intel said today that its “Oak Trail” chipset is now available and it will be in tablets and tablet-hybrids throughout the year. Will this be enough to help it compete against ARM?

The new Atom Z670 appears to be the main part of its tablet push and this offers 1080p video decode, support for Adobe Flash, long battery life and it works with Android, MeeGo and Windows. The company says the Intel tablet chip is about 60% smaller than previous generations and it should have all-day battery life.

“The new Intel Atom ‘Oak Trail’ platform, with ‘Cedar Trail’ to follow, are examples of our continued commitment to bring amazing personal and mobile experiences to netbook and tablet devices, delivering architectural enhancements for longer battery life and greater performance,” said Doug Davis, vice president and general manager of the Netbook and Tablet Group at Intel, in a prepared statement. “We are accelerating the Intel Atom product line to now move faster than Moore’s law, bringing new products to market on three process technologies in the next 3 years.”

The Intel tablet chip is the computing giant trying to keep pace with the rapidly-growing market that’s being dominated by ARM. With tablets expected to be the next major wave in computers, it’s good to see Intel jumping in early.
