Microsoft concept video shows future ripe with pico-projecting phones and tablets

Microsoft premiered a concept video that illustrates what the company believes technology is prepared to evolve over the next five to ten years. The software giant’s vision is inspired by trends its researchers and engineers are seeing in software, devices, displays, sensors, processors and intelligent systems.

In the video you’ll notice some awesome futuristic capabilities like special eyeglasses that translate audio into English in real-time for a business traveler, a thin screen on a car window which highlights a passing building to show where the woman’s meeting will be the next day, based on information from her phone’s calendar. Lastly, you’ll see how office workers gesture effortlessly to control and reroute text and charts as the screens around them morph and pulse with new information. Tablets play a big role in the video as productivity, communication, and educational tools. Phones share many of the same functions, including voice input for just about everything, but are optimized for being productive in a limited amount of time.

Discussing the concept video, David Jones, Microsoft’s director of envisioning said:

“We see an expanded definition of productivity where it’s not just about getting things done.” He continued saying “It’s also about doing the right things, and doing them well and enjoying the process with other people in a very natural way.”

How cool would it be if Microsoft was right on with its lofty five to ten year prediction? All I know is, I’ll be first in line to get my hands on some of those special eyeglasses to help translate what people are muttering in another language in public places like the grocery store, subway or bus. Thanks to Google, we’re already pretty close.
