Intel makes some of the top desktop processors, and now the manufacturer is aiming again for the mobile market. The company will be using its Intel Atom Z2460 processor, which is optimized for Android, to go up against mobile leader ARM.
One of the first carriers to sell an Intel phone will be Orange, which will carry an Atom powered, Android smartphone later this year. Codenamed “Orange Santa Clara”, the phone will land first as an exclusive to Orange in the UK and France.
Besides its Intel innards, the phone will also include a 4.03-inch display, 16 GB of internal storage, 8-megapixel camera with HD video recording and HSPA+ connectivity. It will run Android Gingerbread with several pre-loaded services specific to Orange. Though it disappointingly will launch with Gingerbread, an update to Ice Cream Sandwich will be available at a later date.
Price and exact launch date was not announced, but the press release did confirm it’ll be affordable and available sometime this summer.
