Mozilla offering phones for apps to get more developers on board
Mozilla has started a campaign to attract more developers to its nascent mobile platform. The company is (obviously) targeting HTML5 app developers, both existing ones (which have an app for other mobile platform) and those just entering the market. Telefonica Confirms Firefox OS Device Release In Q3 2013
Firefox OS device launch plans have been confirmed today by Telefonica, which will be bringing Alcatel and ZTE devices to Spain, Colombia and Venezuela in Q3 2013. Firefox OS handsets manufactured by LG, Huawei and Sony will be launched in Q4 2013. Carriers that have pledged support for the nascent smartphone OS are Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile), Etisalat, Smart, Sprint, Telefonica, America Movil, KDDI, Telecom Italia, Telenor, China Unicom, 3 Group, KT, MegaFon, Qtel, SingTel, TMN and VimpelCom. Firefox OS Simulator 3.0 Now Available
Mozilla’s Firefox OS may not be so popular here in the states, but in Europe and other emerging markets the new mobile OS is showing much promise. Firefox OS-based Geeksphone Keon clears the FCC
Geeksphone Keon has cleared the FCC, allowing government-employed engineers to play with one of the first Firefox OS-based devices before the rest of the world. If you recall, this is an entry-level device, one that comes with a 3.5-inch HVGA screen and 1GHz single-core processor. Moreover, there’s 3G (HSPA) radio on board as well as 1,580mAh Li-ion battery. Firefox OS To Launch In June in Four Emerging Markets
It’s been a hot minute since we’ve had any news about the upcoming Firefox OS, and today we have new details about the release of the new mobile operating system. Mozilla CEO Gary Kovacs revealed today at AllThingsD’s Dive Into Mobile conference that the first Firefox phones will be released around June of this year, rolling out in emerging markets such as Venezuela, Brazil, Spain and Portugal. Mozilla unveils JavaScript API for web and mobile payments
Mozilla unveiled a new JavaScript API that would enable easy payments on the (mobile) web. The navigator.mozPay() will debut on the Firefox OS with support for multiple payment providers and carrier billing. When a web app invokes the API, users will be presented with a secure window from which they’ll be able to easily make a purchase. Mozilla demos Firefox OS on Dreamfone
Not too much buzz has been surrounding Mozilla’s Firefox OS lately, probably because the company is hard at work developing it behind the scenes. Mozilla did share a demo recently that you’re able to watch below of the operating system running on a prototype Dreamfone, which is a low-end Firefox OS phone announced at Mobile World Congress 2013 with an ARM Cortex A5 chip clocked at 1GHz. Mozilla To Offer Firefox OS App Development Workshops
Mozilla’s upcoming Firefox OS is slated to be released on a few mid to low range smartphones later this year, and Mozilla is hoping to speed up app development for its new OS by announcing a series of workshops focused on developing apps for the nascent OS. Workshops will be taking place in Madrid, Spain on April 20th, Bogota, Columbia on May 18th and Warsaw, Poland on June 1st. Firefox OS may be up for a good start with 17 operators wowing to support the nascent platform. Among those committing to carry these smartphones are Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile), Etisalat, Smart, Sprint, Telefonica, America Movil, KDDI, Telecom Italia, Telenor, China Unicom, 3 Group, KT, MegaFon, Qtel, SingTel, TMN and VimpelCom, while Telstra has only “welcomed” the initiative. Sony releases experimental Firefox OS ROM for Xperia E Smartphone
Just a few days ago at MWC, Sony announced that it to would be throwing its hat in the ring of Firefox OS device makers. Today, Sony is making good on that announcement by releasing an experimental ROM for its Xperia E smartphone. The new ROM solidifies Sony’s commitment to the new HTML-5 based OS. Alcatel and ZTE won’t be the only companies making a Firefox-based phone for so long. From a press release talking about co-operation between Sony Mobile and Telefónica, we learn that the Japanese company will join the trend and release its own device that runs Firefox mobile OS.
