According to a new study by ABI Research, the annual volume of smartphone app downloads will reach 56 billion this year, with Android platform grabbing more than half (58%) of the market. Rest of the cake is split between Apple’s iOS, Microsoft’s Windows Phone and BlackBerry, accounting for 33%, 4% and 3%, respectively. Egnyte, a paid service geared toward “enterprise file sharing” across devices, did an experiment tracking which mobile operating systems a sample of 100,000 of its paying customers were using to access it. Amazon is slowly moving in on Apple’s tablet market share. According to a recent Yankee Group survey, Amazon is the second most desirable vendor among consumers planning to buy a tablet. App stores like Google Play and Windows Phone Store that have implemented Direct Carrier Billing solutions have experienced a sharp increase in transaction volumes, average transactions values and conversion rates, according to a new white paper from Juniper Research and Amdocs. The GSMA’s Mobile Money for the Unbanked (MMU) programme released the findings of its second annual Global Mobile Money Adoption Survey to analyze the state of the mobile money industry in 2012. The research shows the number of active mobile money users grew impressively with more than 30 million people undertaking 224.2 million transactions totaling $4.6 billion during the month of June 2012 alone.
