In Devices, KDDI, Sony Ericsson
We knew its coming. However, we were hoping to see the Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) W52S hitting the Western hemisphere. It’s a great device nevertheless and, if we can’t, at least our readers in Japan can enjoy using it.

The W52S looks even sexier than we initially imagined — it comes in two vivid colors, Arpeggio Blue and Pizzicato Pink, and good ol’ Silver. In terms of specs, this slider boasts the large 2.7″ 240×432 high-res high-quality screen (thanks to RealityMAX, Bravia technology), tons of available memory (2GB), a 2 MP camera, an FM transmitter and the M2 memory card slot. The W52S has dimensions of 108×57x22 mm, and weighs 130g. So, it may not be the smallest Walkman phone out there, but it’s certainly one of the most feature-packed. Hopefully, Sony Ericsson will transfer this baby to Europe and the U.S. (via: Gizmodo)

Rumor and hearsay are floating around that the Symbian UIQ3 operating system will soon be supporting the popular VoIP application, Skype. The recently released Sony Ericsson P1i shows, on page 66 of its white paper, a mention of “Skype – Voice over IP application that lets the user make mobile phone calls over the Internet.” This would mean that Symbian UIQ3 owners will be able to take advantage of the free internet calls that Skype software allows.
Keep your fingers crossed on this one! (and hook it up with some additional information, if you can)

In Gaming, Sony Ericsson
Despite various reports indicating that mobile is where the gaming industry goes, Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) seems to be cautious with its mobile gaming plans. According to handset maker’s president Miles Flint there are still many hurdles to be overcome for mobile gaming, particularly with regard to the multiplayer experience. But the problems don’t end there — Flirt also added that issues with screen size, battery life, functionality and available services are the problem. “There is a constant set of trade offs. We haven’t yet seen that gaming is quite there in terms of performance,” Flint added.
On the other hand, we see Nokia (NYSE: NOK) investing heavily in its N-Gage platform. It’s hard to say who’s right here. Personally, I would love to see Nokia bringing high-quality games on market. Then, I guess we could see Sony Ericsson following that move with even more great games… What’s your take?

Wow, Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) is really on a roll here. First they announce all those slick new phones, including the incredible Sony Ericsson P1, then we spied some info on a possible Shinobu (we love that codename!) Walkman Phone prototype, then we get notice that the FCC has passed the Sony Ericsson M610i (Lizy) for US duty, and now there’s this new spy pic (thanks to Esato forums user XUMDEO, via Just Another Mobile Phone Blog) of the Sony Ericsson W52S – the unannounced Walkman Phone (yes, another one). The W52S rocks a slider form factor with 2GB of internal storage, a microSD (and MemoryStick Duo Pro – just give it up already, Sony), and 2MP autofocus shooter. Don’t expect the camera on this sucker to be anything better than decent (it isn’t Cyber-Shot branded), but do expect a nifty “pill-shape” and huge screen! We should see an announcement in about a week, or something like that…

Yesterday we showed you that awesomely slick Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) Walkman slider that we know only as the Shinobu. Today we submit to you the Sony Ericsson M610i (codename: Lizy) via the FCC test pages. Presumably, the older brother of the Sony Ericsson M600i Symbian OS qwerty-smartphone, the Lizy boasts full UMTS 3G on tri-band (900/1800/1900Mhz) networks. Details from the FCC approval are slim to, well, none, but if you want some speculation on the M610i’s abilities, check our previous coverage. We can assume that the M610i will address all the shortcomings of the M600i.

The Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) W850 Walkman Phone’s successor, codenamed Shinobu, has been spotted on a Polish auction site. The Shinobu, pictured above, is said to be straight off the Sony Ericsson factory floor and looks to be a prototype – called the X123i. This thing is either a true prototype or a fake, but specs and dimensions are spot-on for the real thing – and it looks pretty good too. The 12.5mm slim, sleek (it is Sony Ericsson, after all) slider looks to be rockin’ HSDPA and a 2MP shooter, and is going for $680 USD. Prototype or fake, this thing is pretty sexy!

We got a bunch of nice big pics! Click on…

In Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, iPhone

Instead of mocking and belittling newcomer Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) for trying to break into the ultra-competitive mobile phone game, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) are apparently welcoming the green-eared manufacturer with open arms. The Apple iPhone’s release date is one of the most anticipated product launches in history. Still, Nokia and Sony Ericsson seem pretty sure of themselves and their fortified position in the industry.
Mats Lindoff, Sony Ericsson CTO, stated that the company is not worried about the iPhone because it’s Walkman handsets have a comfortable market market position – in addition to the 3G offerings so sorely lacking from Apple’s iPhone.
Rick Simonson, Nokia’s CFO, commented that the release of the iPhone will only help drive the market for high-end multimedia handsets – something Nokia excels in. Samsung also chimed in with the assertion that the iPhone is not even released and that consumer response has yet to be determined.
