While a Microsoft spokesperson declined to comment, the Verge story reports changes to the Dashboard UI and Live Tiles to coincide with the new Xbox being unveiled on the 21st, and changes in Windows 8.1: “Microsoft is preparing to update its Xbox 360 with another dashboard update. Windows Phone market share now in third place worldwide as BlackBerry slips

According to new market share numbers from IDC, the International Data Corporation, Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system is now in third place worldwide. It snatches the position previously held by BlackBerry which is now in fourth place; or in other words, the land of mediocrity. This past quarter, IDC reports that Windows Phone accounted for 3.2 percent of worldwide phone shipments. BlackBerry accounted for 2.9 percent. That’s pretty sad for a company that practically dominated the industry not too many years ago. Windows Phone growth is slow, but hey, at least Read more

Windows Phone 8 getting new features in summer update

Alongside the announcement of the Nokia Lumia 925 Windows Phone handset this morning, Microsoft announced a new version of Windows Phone 8 that will roll out to devices this summer. The update brings minor improvements and a few new features. One of the new (er, perhaps “recycled” is a better term) features is the return of support for FM radio, which Windows Phone 8 users highly requested. In keeping with the theme of music, the update improves song information and metadata accuracy on your phone. It also makes it easier Read more

Uh-oh: Windows Phone Store just passes 145,000 apps with sluggish growth

Windows Phone news is always a mixed bag because you never know if you’re going to see something positive about how the OS is doing or something suggesting Microsoft has a problem on its hands. In this case, unfortunately, it’s the latter. As part of the official unveiling of the Nokia Lumia 928 for Verizon this morning, the folks in Redmond slipped in some revealing stats about the Windows Phone Store: it now has 145,000 apps in it. Worded in that way, that sounds like a pretty decent accomplishment. It’s a relatively Read more

According to internal documents obtained by TechCrunch, Microsoft is looking to buy Nook Media LLC from Barnes & Noble and other investors. The document also reveals the product roadmap for the Nook, which calls for a discontinuation of the tablet hardware by the end of fiscal year 2014. The software was expected to become the focus of the Read more

Next Xbox Won’t Require an “Always On” Connection

Gamers can breathe a sigh of relief today. A leaked Microsoft memo hints at some important aspects of the 3rd Xbox. Most importantly, the new system will NOT require a constant internet connection - an unpopular rumored feature of the upcoming next-gen box. According to Ars Technica, the memo was sent to all full-time employees working on the next Xbox and contained this statement: “Durango [the codename for the next Xbox] is designed to deliver the future of entertainment while engineered to be tolerant of today’s Internet.” The memo goes on to say, “There are a Read more

Microsoft Releases New Video of ‘Holodeck’ Technology.

Microsoft released a new video today showing its Illumiroom technology in real time. The tech demos in the video used a fairly simple combination of a projector and a Kinect to create some pretty impressive room filling visuals. The hardware is stock, but the innovation is in the software running the show. “The LED is projecting for a frame and then turning it off and Kinect IR is reading those layovers,” said  Microsoft’s Eric Rudder, speaking to The Verge. “Then the Kinect turns off for a frame and then the projector Read more

Microsoft’s new Windows Phone ad tells Apple and Samsung fans to stop fighting

Microsoft has created what I consider a brilliant new Windows Phone ad that tells Apple and Samsung followers to stop arguing with each other all the time. It’s true that the Android vs. iOS battle has evolved nowadays into an Apple vs. Samsung battle. Microsoft says, “Don’t fight. Switch.” and just buy a Windows Phone handset instead. The ad takes place at a wedding. The groom’s side of the wedding all own Galaxy phones and the bride’s side all have iPhones. When someone with a Galaxy phone takes a picture, Read more
